At least three measured values are required to form the median. The symbol OR(n) specifies additional requirements, such as a higher number of measurements for applying the median acceptance rule.

Tmax rule: a part is measured and 10% of the measured values exceed the upper tolerance limit. Under the Tmax rule this would not be acceptable, since no measured value may exceed the limit.

T16% rule: a part is measured and 10% of the measured values exceed the upper tolerance limit. Under the T16% rule this would be acceptable, since the exceedance lies within the 16% limit.

Tmed rule: when measuring a surface texture parameter, the median of all measured values lies within the specified tolerance, although some individual values lie above and others below it. This satisfies the median tolerance acceptance rule, and the part is considered conforming.
