What does a CMM program cost? Offline programming and engineering-hours packages

A purchased coordinate measuring machine (CMM) is not yet a production-ready measuring solution. It needs a measurement strategy, a program matched to machine, probe head, styli and fixture, and real commissioning. CSL programs offline — your measuring machine stays free for production measurements in the meantime.

Reference part and reference price

To keep the figure verifiable, we use a fixed example: an aluminium housing, 300 × 200 × 120 mm, with 30 defined inspection characteristics. It combines regular geometries, form and position tolerances and CAD-based freeform surfaces that are measured by scanning. One part variant, one agreed measuring system, one defined probe head, a complete stylus configuration, one defined fixture, one agreed software version. Specification to ISO GPS or ASME Y14.5, with complete and released CAD and drawing data.

Why 30 characteristics do not automatically mean the same effort

The number of inspection characteristics is the weakest cost driver. Two parts with 30 characteristics each can differ several times over in programming effort. What matters is how unambiguous the requirements are and how difficult the characteristics are to reach.

ISO GPS and ASME Y14.5

CSL implements the inspection characteristics according to the specification system defined on the drawing. ISO GPS and ASME Y14.5 are both supported. The standards and editions stated on the drawing govern. The rules of the two systems are not mixed.

A full drawing review is not part of the reference price. Unclear, incomplete or contradictory specifications are not interpreted silently: CSL points out the ambiguities identified and agrees the necessary assumptions with the customer. These assumptions are documented and released before implementation. The resulting clarification, adaptation or reprogramming effort is charged on a time basis or against the engineering-hours package.

How we handle corrections
Technical programming errors made by CSL are corrected at no additional charge.
Changes to the drawing or the requirements are charged.
Adaptations due to incomplete or contradictory customer data are charged.
Changes to assumptions already released count as new effort.
Changes to machine, probe head, styli or fixture are charged.

Software systems supported

CSL writes measurement programs in the systems used at the customer's site. The underlying cost drivers are similar in all of them: inspection characteristics, measurement strategy, datums, freeform surfaces, scanning strategy, stylus configuration, fixture, program structure and the scope of the handover.

Optional commissioning

On request, CSL commissions the offline program on the real customer machine. This service is quoted as an optional item and can be charged against an existing engineering-hours package. Travel time and any travel expenses are not part of the package and are invoiced separately.

CSL supports commissioning and the technical functional check. The final release for series production rests with the customer unless agreed otherwise. Whether the inspection process can reliably assess the required tolerance is a separate question, answered by a measurement process capability study.

2 · Engineering-hours package
Reserved engineering capacity for recurring demand
In practice, packages between 200 and 500 hours are common. Graduated preferential terms apply to larger packages and are quoted individually.
The main benefit is not the price advantage but the planned capacity: packages are paid in advance, which allows CSL to plan and reserve the agreed specialist resources for the customer.

Resource planning and validity

How the capacity is provided is defined jointly for each project: as a weekly or monthly volume of hours, for example, or distributed flexibly across the year. An engineering-hours package does not imply immediate availability at any time. The capacity, call-off and processing windows agreed in the quotation apply.

The size of the package is set on the basis of reliably foreseeable project or capacity demand over the next six months. This means the booked volume can normally be used in full. The package remains valid for twelve months, which provides reserve if schedules or projects shift. Remaining hours can be extended by mutual agreement where needed; an extension is project-related and not automatic.

New measurement programs, program variants and program changes · optimisation of existing programs, travel paths, scanning strategies and cycle time · troubleshooting and technical support · support during commissioning · on-site working time. The package is assigned to the customer and can be used across projects and software systems during its term; the specific resource and schedule planning is agreed per project. Travel time and travel expenses are invoiced separately.
Time recording and reporting
All work is recorded in units of 15 minutes, or 0.25 hours, and deducted from the package. The scope of reporting is agreed per project and may include project, task, software system, date, time spent and remaining hours.

The programs differed in scope and complexity and were successfully commissioned by the customer.
